2024 Desktop Calendar

We originally designed the 2024 calendar to celebrate Mr. Cost’s 50 years of painting Maui. In the light of the current devastation to our beloved island that has brought us to our knees with grief, this 50-year anniversary has taken on a whole new meaning. Looking back at Mr. Cost’s older paintings of Lahaina our hearts are aching. We have redesigned the calendar to feature some of Mr. Cost’s early Lahaina paintings. While it is heartbreaking to look at the way it used to be, it also inspires us for the long, hard journey of rebuilding.

20% of the profits from the sales of this calendar will go to Hawai’i Community Foundation's Maui Strong Fund, which disperses funds to many essential services to our community in this vulnerable time.

January starts off the new year with Little Green House (1982), an homage to the days when the hillsides of Lāhainā were verdant with cane fields. In February, step back in time to 1985, to Mutual Curiosity, an amusing scene that caught Mr. Cost’s eye of two cows peering over a rock wall at the entrance to the Von Tempsky estate just off upper Kula Road. In March, you’ll take the old dirt road from ‘Ulupalakua to Makena, which closed in the early 1980s. Back Road to Makena documents this once 20-minute drive to the beach. A special treat awaits in April; Mr. Cost considers Jacaranda Season the most epic painting in his career, picturing the old Haleakalā Ranch house on Hanamu Road. Continuing through spring, Upcountry Maui is a reminder of the water tanks that once dotted the hillsides of Kula. In June, you’ll take a catamaran ride to visit the east side of Moloka’i. Private Landing was painted entirely from memory after Mr. Cost visited this majestic beach in 1984. In July, North Coast takes you on the windswept road to glorious views in Hāna. To cool off in August, you’ll refresh in the darkness of Plantation Night Light, a home in Lāhainā with an old chevy parked in the garage. Take a tour in the month of September of one of the most beautiful south shore Maui beaches, Makena Stroll. This was painted in the mid 1980s when the road to Makena was still dirt. As fall crests, enjoy the glow of the sunset on Ke’anae Peninsula with Poi and Bananas. This was painted after a weekend with Mr. Cost’s ‘ohana at a hale surrounded by kalo farms. You will enjoy the quiet reflections of Sunlit (1979) in November. This piece celebrates Maui’s historic waterways that irrigate crops from the mountains to the sea. In December, bask in the cozy atmosphere of a rarely seen painting entitled Late Evening Company. This is one of Mr. Cost’s earliest night paintings dating back to 1977.
