In 2019, I visited the workspace of my childhood friend who is a lei maker. The moment I walked in, I knew I needed to paint it. It felt like stepping into a magical apothecary. Wooden shelves lining the walls burst with every plant imaginable gathered in bottles, vases and vessels. The table was scattered with platters, bowls and baskets organizing blossoms and berries by shape and color. It was like looking at a painter's palette but in a new fantastical form. I spent 6 months painting this scene to bring "Lei for Sale" to life. I especially loved painting the tiny ipu (a gourd used as a Hawaiian percussion instrument) that holds the lei needles, and the clippers laying open awaiting their next task. I hope this scene sparks your imagination like an "I Spy" book. Thank you to Hawai'i Flora + Fauna for inspiring this piece with your bountiful table.
