In my opinion a strong painting has a strong drawing underneath it. Linear composition, like the tracings of arrows, depicts depth and dimension. It's what changes a flat surface into a window or a view. The act of keeping the lines flowing into each other is the art of composition.
Everyone notices the arrows of linear composition. Maybe not as consciously as an artist, but everybody knows and senses balance and imbalance. I enjoy the task of pushing the limits of balance while keeping things steady. Gates and fences are handy for that.
