As we celebrate Mr. Cost’s 51st year of painting Maui, we are looking back at paintings from the first decade of Mr. Cost’s career. We invite you to enjoy these historic glimpses of rural Maui in the 70s and 80s.

The cover of the calendar features “Back from Fishing” (1976), picturing the old employee housing for the Hāna Hotel. Purchasers of 6 desktop calendars will receive a complimentary, hand signed, 10” x 8” paper print of this painting.

Our 2025 calendar starts off the new year with “Daybreak” (1979), a meandering walk down the unpaved old Makena Road in early morning light.

In February, head back upcountry in “Home for Lunch” (1979) and rejoice in a cozy afternoon with a friend’s truck parked in front and laundry hanging out to dry.

As winter tips into spring, wander up Polipoli Road to “Okumura’s Gate” (1977) and peer over the old farm gate to his cabbage patch.

In April, cool off and gaze out at the ocean from the lush undergrowth of “Hana Bay Puddles” (1981).

As spring comes into full bloom, refresh your senses in “Verdant Hollow” (1978) a dreamy scene inspired by wanderings through Wai’ehu in the afternoon light.

As summer begins, walk through “Mango Thicket” (1979) along the road to Hāna looking up towards the majestic Kaupo Gap.

In July, spread out a picnic blanket on a Kula hillside and gaze out at bountiful palm trees and an old feed shed in “Shaded Fence Line” (1978).

In the heat of summer, splash into a glassy “Tide Pool” (1978) and watch the tiny waterfalls pouring down the lava rocks along the shoreline of south Maui.

In September, take a trip to “Rural Kā’anapali” (1981), back when the hills were rich with waving green sugarcane.

As fall settles in, tread through a rain-watered pasture to soak in the view of the Pali coastline and an overgrown cistern in “Clearing” (1979).

In November, celebrate the Upcountry farm life with “Rain in the Valley” (1977) and watch the heavenly shafts of sunlight cutting through the sky.

Close off the year with a peaceful beach walk in “Makena Morning” (1987) and delight in the sky reflecting on the glassy sand.
